Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®)

Step I and Step II - MBTI®

MBTI® does not look at behaviour but at explaining sources in personality. In doing so, in-depth learning and development become a reality. This Jungian theory insists on the importance of the personality type as the main source of energy for an individual.
The great merit of Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs consists in the translation of the Jungian Type Theory into a workable, inspiring, respectful and worldwide renowned model.
In a very constructive way, the MBTI® defines behaviour in 4 scales of preference (energy, information, deciding and lifestyle) which together combine into a type.
A personality type explains work, learning and leadership style. It very clearly expresses different attitudes and approaches in times of change.
As in-depth specialists, ACT consultants have developed "Personal Leadership", "Leadership" and "Change Coach" programs based on type theory.

Due to the unique added value it is important to state that all ACT consultants are certified MBTI® STEP II (20 subscales) users, allowing an even more thorough analysis for personal development or teambuilding sessions.

MBTI® and Change

One’s attitude towards change is based on one's personality. Depending on one’s type, everyone has his/her added value in a change process.
Through understanding yourself, you become aware of different attitudes and needs in regards to change. In doing so you’ll be able to transform possible resistance into positive energy to co-operate.

Acquired awareness of different attitudes towards change helps individuals to optimise the way they deal with change processes.

Through awareness of your own needs and resistance in times of change, you’ll become able:

  • to leave your comfort zone;
  • to accept your lack of control and to deal with the unknown;
  • to see the benefits of change;
  • to develop creative initiatives that contribute to an active change process;
  • to stop doing some things and start doing others.

ACT offers tailor-made programmes that teach individuals to cope with resistance and inspires them to participate actively in the the change process. The notion of the added value of all types in the realisation of change is essential.

MBTI® and Teambuilding

ACT facilitates and guides the process of getting insight in and becoming aware of team features, as well as choosing and implementing actions for improvement. In doing so personal differences turn into team complementarity.
Using MBTI®, ACT helps teams to become more successful, both on process and content.
Effective teamwork is about optimising the use of the qualities of all the different team-members. This becomes a possibility when team-members:

  • know the qualities and pitfalls of all team-members involved;
  • are aware of the qualities and pitfalls;
  • make use of them in a consciously constructive way in topics as communication, problem solving, decision making, team organisation.

Team dynamics start from the type distribution within the team.
Knowing the strengths and pitfalls helps to select the appropriate (learning) style and objectives for team development.
ACT offers tailormade programmes that enable teams to optimise team effectiveness through the notion of complementarity.

MBTI® and Personal Coaching

Personal Coaching as a partnership with an individual that focuses on specific areas for development, can only happen when the true origin of specific behaviour is detected and inspired in the most personal way. Awareness of one’s preferences is essential in this process.
MBTI® gives the coach and coachee an enhanced insight in individual learning styles. This optimizes the learning process
By means of the MBTI® tool the coach helps the individual to increase his/her self-awareness by:

  • exploring one’s qualities and pitfalls;
  • developing respect for oneself and the others;
  • identifying strengths and pitfalls as possible domains for development.

ACT offers tailor-made programmes that through the increased self-awareness will help the individual to be more effective in all areas to him/her, such as dealing with change, conflict handling, communication, assertiveness and leadership.

MBTI® and Leadership

Leadership behaviour is based on personality. True leadership development can only come from increased self-awareness.
Leaders create the vision, guide people through the change process and develop them for high performance.
In creating a vision, insight in and awareness of the effects of the 4 functions inspires leaders in the conception of the vision. It further helps them in influencing team members to go into the same direction.
Real leaders thrive on change. MBTI® explains the difference in reactions among team-members. Knowledge of different learning styles, through the MBTI®, helps leaders to optimise the way they pick up their coaching role. In doing so increased team performance is a consequence.
ACT offers tailor-made programmes that teach leaders to cope with resistance and guide them through the change process. The notion of the added value of all types in the realisation of change is essential.

MBTI® and Coaching

Act addresses coaching in all its aspects: in the leadership role, as an internal coach or as a change coach…
MBTI® gives a coach more insight into his overall attitude towards the basic coaching competencies as well as his personal learning style.
The MBTI® tool helps the coach to:

  • Develop learning activities adapted to the coachees learning style
  • Detect and learn approaches and systems helping a coachee to:
    • explore his/her qualities and pitfalls
    • increase his/her self-awareness
    • identify his/her domains of development;
    • Suggest actions on how to help coachees to improve performance.

Depending on the participants’ expectations ACT can focus on applications for change coaching, communication, performance improvement etc…

MBTI® and Career Coaching

Career coaching is about identifying one’s motivators and drivers, qualities and pitfalls as people tend to be more successful when their occupation is in line with their personal strengths and interests.
By using MBTI®, Career coaching exactly gives an insight in these motivators, drivers, qualities and pitfalls.
This is a starting point for:

  • optimising the match within your actual job;
  • exploring possibilities about future job challenges;
  • learning about your fit within an organisational context;
  • developing self-awareness on how your decision-making process, information gathering and the way of presenting yourself impacts possible career opportunities;
  • tactics for using your personality preferences to stay motivated during your career.

ACT starts by analysing the actual situation, looks for patterns within the past and suggests workable solutions for the future.
